- In 2017, researchers at the University of Newcastle and the senior management of Hunter Water held broad ranging discussions around the topic of Realising Resilience at Hunter Water. Two projects coalesced from this interaction, one being related to recreation and catchment protection. The other was tentatively entitled Fostering Innovation in Hunter Water, and both projects were commenced in 2018. A PhD student, Mohammad Nazmi Newaz, was engaged to conduct the innovation research, and by 2019 it was recognised that an opportunity existed to conduct a nationwide survey of innovativeness across the water services sector. Further discussions, now with the Water Services Association of Australia facilitated engagement with a project team that included representatives from 14 utilities and 20 innovation managers from within them. The project aimed to build upon the state-of-the-art research conducted in other industries, contextualising it within the water sector and focusing on only those factors of relevance to it. The research recognised the importance of capturing both top-down, strategic innovation management perspectives as well as bottom-up, lived experiences of innovation initiatives. The ultimate intention was to derive a sense of the innovation drivers and inhibitors influencing the sector, to inform it as to where its efforts might best be directed. By providing both these perspectives this research gives a glimpse into the gap between intention and reality, suggesting areas for concentrated attention into the future.
